About Garry McCoy

Garry McCoy is an Australian former professional motorcycle racer.

Garry made the road racing community sit up and pay attention in 1992 when, at the age of 19, he won the Winfield Triple Challenge 250cc Production Class at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney.  It was Garry’s second road racing event and just three months later he was on a 125cc World Championship Grand Prix grid.

Mentored early in his career by Barry Sheene, Garry went on to enjoy an 18 year long career as a professional racer, winning races in the 125cc and 500cc MotoGP Championships and in World Superbike Championships.

Loved by fans worldwide for his unique riding style, Garry was affectionately nicknamed The Slide King for thrilling spectators and the press with his exciting rear wheel slide cornering technique, a style he attributes to his early years racing dirt track and speedway in Australia.

Garry was a featured rider in the 2003 MotoGP documentary film Faster and made a mark in the history books as the last rider to put a 500cc 2 stroke bike on the front row of a MotoGP grid.

Having retired from professional racing in 2010, Garry, an accredited motorcycling coach, remains committed to the ongoing development of motorcycling sports and to the growth of junior racing programs in Australia and overseas.

This is another dream realised.  A lifelong passion. Even when I was winning races at the highest level, I always knew I would come home and do this.
